How to do the smudging thing? When you get to the vine thing you just go to the bottom and click the brush icon and it's obvious after that. After that I took the sparks brush put it into it's own layer and brushed around my char. Put the layer on hide, then I went to edit copy visible then paste into layer. Then displaced it by the sparks layer.
